Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Herat Field Office, Herat. The Political Affairs Assistant reports to the Political Affairs Team leader.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: • Monitors and analyzes political, socio-economic, and other politically relevant developments in the Western Region. • Receives and processes information contained in communications and publications from different sources, including from de facto authorities and other counterparts. • Assists with preparing draft reports, briefing notes, background papers and talking points. • Prepares summaries of articles from a wide variety of sources and drafts correspondence and reports, in particular, daily situation reports. • Updates information in databases that track information relevant to the assigned area, including on shared drives. • Undertakes political outreach to various groups such as minority communities, women, youth, and community and religious leaders, to develop effective contact networks at the direction of the Head of Office or Political Team leader. • Designs and facilitates, in coordination with UN AFPs, political outreach events with Afghan interlocutors. • Organizes and participates in field missions across the Western Region. • Interprets from English into Dari and vice-versa during meetings; Translate documents from English into Dari and vice-versa. • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required. A university degree in political science, international relations, social sciences, law, public administration; international economics, economics, or journalism is desirable. Post-secondary training in political affairs/international relations or a related field is desirable.

Work Experience
Experience in building a network of contacts with Afghan interlocutors is required. Experience with political analysis and reporting is desirable. Experience in designing, facilitating and organizing political outreach events is desirable. Work experience in the Western Region is desirable. A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible related work experience in political science, international relations, legal/paralegal, disarmament, conflict resolution or related work with international organizations/nongovernment organizations, and civil society organizations or working as a civil servant is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three (3) years for candidates who possess a first level university degree or higher in political science, international relations, social sciences, law, public administration; international economics, economics, journalism, or a related field.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in oral and written Dari is required. Knowledge of oral and written Pashto is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
