Mission and objectives

UNODC’s mandate is to support Member States in the prevention of illicit drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism which hare encompassed in the framework of the UNODC Regional Programme for South-Eastern Europe 2024/2029. The three pillars of the UNODC field work are:

- Field-based technical cooperation projects enhancing the capacity of Member States to counteract illicit drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism.
- Research and analytical work to increase knowledge and understanding of drug and crime-related issues, and expand the evidence base for policy and operational deci-sions.
- Normative, policy and advocacy work to assist states in the ratification and implemen-tation of international treaties and the development of domestic legislation and policies in the thematic areas under UNODC mandates.

UNODC advocates a balanced approach to drug control, emphasising the importance of preventive education and treatment for addicts, as well as measures to reduce production and trafficking. UNODC assists governments and law enforcement agencies in increasing the effectiveness of domestic legislation as well as in enhancing their capacities to investigate, dismantle and prosecute trafficking groups, through technical assistance, training and the provision of modern technical equipment.

Context

The position is located in Sarajevo, in the UNODC Programme Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina (POBIH), which is part of the UNODC Regional Office for South-Eastern Europe. The UNV will work under the direct supervision of the Head of Office, POBIH, and the overall guidance of the Deputy Regional Representative, Regional Office for South-Eastern Europe (ROSEE),

The Office works directly with the state-level and other institutions, civil society organizations and local communities in order to develop and implement drug control, crime prevention and criminal justice, prevention of terrorism and anti-corruption programmes that are tailored to the needs of assisted countries.

The UN Volunteer will have the opportunity to build connections with UNODC team from various global programmes and learn about their ways in which fight against crime can support criminal networks disruption. As well, the UN Volunteer will have an opportunity to meet and learn about the work and engagement of other international organisations, national stakeholders and other interested parties.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Head of UNODC Programme Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina (POBIH), and overall supervision of the Deputy Regional Representative, Regional Office for South-Eastern Europe (ROSEE), the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
• Support the Head of the UNODC Programme Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina (POBIH) and other colleagues in the Office in the implementation of the UNODC man-dates in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the UNODC Regional Programme for South-Eastern Europe 2024/2029 and the wider region of South-Eastern Europe, in particular in the con-text of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development;
• Support the implementation of the UNODC Global programmes’ implementation in Bos-nia and Herzegovina, and regionally as needed, through performing related work;
• Assist in actions and tasks aimed at the visibility, advocacy and reporting on the UNODC work in Bosnia and Herzegovina and South-Eastern Europe;
• Participate in the activities organized and supported by the UNODC Programme Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina and regional activities of UNODC to take place in Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad, and assist with the preparation, reporting and visibility of such activities;
• Contribute to the UNODC work within the UN Country Team in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the various inputs for the products of the UN Country Team (i.e. reports, brief-ings, plans, etc.);
• Perform other tasks as required.
