Mission and objectives

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific: Subregional Office for South and South-West Asia (ESCAP-SSWA) is the subregional platform to promote regional cooperation for inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in South and South-West Asia.

The SSWA Office bridges the developing and developed countries in the subregion and works with ten member States in the subregion, namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Turkey.

Context

Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT) is a specialized regional institution of the UNESCAP. It is committed to fostering sustainable development through the promotion of technology transfer and innovation. In the context of increasing climate challenges, APCTT is focusing on the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and remote sensing applications to address climate change impacts in the Asia-Pacific region. By leveraging these advanced technologies, APCTT aims to support member states in enhancing climate resilience, improving environmental monitoring, and facilitating data-driven decision-making processes for sustainable development. This internship aligns with APCTT's need for disseminating communications to bridge technology gaps and promote cutting-edge solutions for the Asia Pacific region's pressing environmental issues.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of Programme Management Officer, the UN University Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

• Support the APCTT team in refining and implementing communication strategies that high-light the organization’s efforts in AI and climate change.
• Assist in the dissemination of key messages on climate technologies.
• Assist in managing communication channels, liaising with stakeholders, and helping to am-plify APCTT’s initiatives across the Asia-Pacific region, with a strong interest in AI, climate change, and sustainable development.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:
• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by read-ing relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for in-stance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
• Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
• Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publica-tions/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
• Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
• Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
