Mission and objectives

WFP IND organization mission TBD

Context

WFP India has four Strategic Objectives (SO), one of which is Climate Change, Resilient Food System and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) (SO4). Under this Objective, WFP India provides technical assistance to the government of India on issues pertaining to climate resilient food systems and livelihoods as well as disaster risk reduction and management, to contribute to the achievement of SDG 2 and SDG 13. WFP India will be implementing various projects on climate adaptation, resilience building and gender transformative change under this objective.

A regional project "Strengthening resilience of vulnerable communities in Sri Lanka and India to increased impacts of climate change (ADAPT4R)", financed by the Adaptation Fund is a five year project (2023-28) for which WFP is appointed as the Multilateral Implementing agency. The project will be implemented through the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC), and the responsible departments of the selected state governments, namely Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu, and aims to enhance the resilience of dryland communities to climate change through improved climate service and targeted adaptation interventions.
Another project has been recently launched in climatically vulnerable northeastern region of Assam will support the smallholder farmers, women and their collectives to improve resilience and sustainable food security using nature-based solutions. WFP is also supporting some other initiatives of the Government of India including mainstreaming of the climate resilient crops like millets.

WFP seeks to engage a UN Volunteer to contribute towards undertaking primary research, developing guidelines and terms of reference for implementation of the project, and creating monitoring and reporting systems of the project activities for these new projects.
