DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Terms of reference

Under the supervision of a technical expert in the respective area, the intern may be assigned matters including but not limited to:

  • Conduct data analysis in qualitative and quantitative ways.
  • Participate in strategic communication brainstorming, develop meeting minutes, and attend other special events (workshops, trainings, and seminars).
  • Apply advanced technologies to implement innovative solutions.
  • Ensure the intranet site serves as an effective communication platform Policy support:

Learning objectives

The purpose of the WHO Internship Programme is to provide an enriching learning experience for students and recent graduates. The Learning Objectives outlined within each internship vacancy are a key component of the programme.

On completion of the internship, the candidate will have gained:

  • Excellent knowledge of WHO, its mandate, structure, and operation mode.
  • Valuable experience in human resources management under a multicultural context, with a particular focus on policy and legal research.
  • A deeper understanding of health and humanitarian assistance, especially in the conflict context.
  • Writing skills for literature review and communication skills.
  • Capacities for multitasking and prioritizing.

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP

6 months

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Have completed the equivalent of three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution prior to commencing the assignment; AND be enrolled in a course of study at a university or equivalent institution leading to a formal qualification (applicants who have already graduated may also qualify for consideration provided that they apply to the internship within six months after completion of their formal qualification).

Education: Education in an accredited educational institution in law, human resources management, international politics, human rights, public administration, social science, or related field.

All interns should be able to demonstrate the following skills in line with the WHO core competencies:

In addition, interns need to be familiar with commonly used computer programmes, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Experience

<-- [if supportLists]-->·<--[endif]-->Work Experience: Applicants are not required to have professional work experience, although prior work experience in policy and law will be an advantage. Excellent IT skills are required.

  • Specialization in Human Resources Management.
  • Experience in policy, legal, or project management matters.
  • Advanced IT Skills – focusing on data analysis and visualization, software applications (e.g., Power BI), organizational networks, or cloud computing.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (different types of texts, comms channels, and audiences).
  • Creative thinking and growth attitude.
  • Knowledge of Arabic is an asset.

Languages

  • Essential: Excellent command of spoken and written English.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of Arabic is an asset.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Interns do not receive a salary. They do however receive a living allowance. The allowance depends on the duty station and other external support (grant, scholarships, etc.) received by the intern. The exact amount of the living allowance will be calculated for each intern, after selection, based on a legal financial disclosure form that the individual will complete. WHO also provides all interns with accident and medical insurance coverage.

  • Interns are not eligible to take up a consultant or other non-staff contract in WHO for a period of three months following the end of the internship. However, no such restriction applies to temporary or longer-term staff positions if the vacancy has been advertised and a competitive process completed.
