Purpose of the role

The GICHD works to support the management and reduction of risks posed by explosive ordnance, as well as improved resilience of affected communities. However, for Explosive Ordnance Risk Reduction (EORR) responses to be efficient, effective, and safe, it requires a clear understanding is required of who is affected and how. In this context, the Centre works to mainstream gender and diversity and promote equality and inclusion in EORR. 

The GDEI programme sits within the Inclusive Risk Reduction division of the GICHD. The programme works collaboratively with partners to support the establishment of well-functioning national capacities for gender and diversity mainstreaming in explosive ordnance affected countries and territories. This is done through the conduct of assessments, trainings, peer learning events, as well as the provision of technical advice. The programme also conducts research and outreach to identify synergies and strengthen linkages between EORR and the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. Finally, technical inputs on GDEI are provided in support of work on multilateral processes, national strategies, standards development / review, operational management, information management, regional cooperation, and ammunition management.

​​The purpose of the role is to plan, implement and monitor activities within Mine Action in collaboration with other programmes and divisions, in line with the GICHD's strategy including in significantly complex contexts by identifying and building partnerships with external parties. The Advisor will provide technical assistance including on assessments, training/workshops, research/ publications.

 Key responsibilities

  1.  Advise partners in relevant area of expertise, understanding their needs, priorities, challenges, and supporting them in developing and implementing norms, policies, procedures, tools, good practices and methodologies. 
  2. Lead, coordinate and develop GICHD’s thematic activities working closely with others divisions’ colleagues.
  3. Manage activities and/or projects in the relevant thematic(s), as assigned by line manager.
  4. Lead and conduct assessments, workshops and provide consultation remotely and onsite.
  5. Design and deliver training programmes.
  6. Represent the GICHD, participate and proactively share expertise externally, including through the delivery of presentations and facilitation of dialogue and discussions.
  7. Prepare budgets and monitor financial accounts for projects assigned by line manager.
  8. Conduct, coordinate and disseminate research in the relevant area of expertise in the form of studies, articles and briefs.
  9. Actively contribute to monitoring and reporting based on the Results Based Management (RBM) system.
  10. Conduct and coordinate the design, implementation and maintenance of relevant systems and tools. 
  11. If applicable, draft, review and coordinate the development of concept notes, funding/project proposals and donor reports.

 Qualifications and professional experience

  • Master’s degree in relevant field is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of previous relevant work experience in EORR and/or disarmament or any equivalent experience in the humanitarian and development sector.
  • Demonstrated qualifications/experience in the relevant thematic area

 Knowledge, skills and competencies

  • Excellent gender and diversity mainstreaming skills 
  • Ability to apply intersectional and feminist approaches 
  • Fluency in English, both written and oral; fluency in an any other language spoken in affected countries an advantage
  • Excellent project management, analytical, planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to coordinate simultaneous activities/projects
  • Effective writing and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multi-cultural settings with a wide range of stakeholders 
  • Knowledge of UN agencies, relevant national authorities, NGOs and humanitarian organisations

 Travel requirements

  • Expected to travel up to 30% of the working time including to countries affected by explosive ordnance, with low-medium-high risk environment

 Salary Information

Please note that the salary level for this role is CHF 128'257.- yearly gross, subject to social security deductions and income tax.
