Malteser International Americas (MIA) has been operational in the USA, Latin America & the Caribbean since 2014 and is currently implementing projects in the fields of Health, Relief, Reconstruction & Rehabilitation; Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH), Sustainable Livelihoods, Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaption in Colombia, Haiti, Peru, Mexico and the USA. Malteser International sees health as a holistic state of full physical, mental and social wellbeing connected to water, sanitation and hygiene; food and nutrition security; shelter, and environmental health. Since 2018, Malteser International Americas has expanded its medical aid activities in Colombia as a response to the increasing influx of refugees from crisis-ridden Venezuela. Livelihood and Income Generation are of increasing importance for sustainable integration and development.

To support the Program Director in leading and strategically developing humanitarian and development-oriented programs in the Americas, MIA is looking for a full-time Deputy of Programs based in the NY Headquarters.

As the Deputy Head of Programs, you will oversee the program team and work closely with the program operations and development/fundraising teams. The Deputy will focus on oversight of US-government-funded programs and their quality. 

Your responsibilities:

  • Overall portfolio management and oversight, quality assurance, and strategic development of the Americas portfolio, with particular focus on USG grants
  • Ensure effective management of awards within the assigned portfolio, incl. strategic and operational plans, start-up, implementation, and close-out
  • Closely collaborate with the operations team supporting Country Office management of awards as well as compliance and communication with donors 
  • Lead on the full life cycle of programs/funds for one assigned response, ensuring adherence to donor rules and regulations and supporting Country Offices to meet key deliverables. 
  • Ensure effective risk management in the regional portfolio in close collaboration with the Program Director, Global Advisors on Safety and Security, Compliance and Integrity Management
  • Representation of MI externally and maintenance of contact with donors, networks, and organizations in the US and region
  • Support the acquisition of public and private funding to support the programs. Strategically plan and implement a shift from current German and EU funding to stronger US funding, also for worldwide funding opportunities.

Your profile:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience, plus at least 5 years of relevant experience 
  • Demonstrated field-level experience in chronic or acute humanitarian crises 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working with and raising funds from international donors; in particular excellent knowledge of the US funding landscape, including PRM, USAID, BHA, and US Foundations with a successful track record in acquiring grants
  • Excellent grant writing skills
  • Proven success working across the full cycle of project/award management and implementation 
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English; Spanish and French would be an asset 
  • High level of identification with the mission and vision of MI as a catholic organization
