Duties and Responsibilities
The intern shall support the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented. Daily responsibilities of Public Information intern include, but are not limited to: -Researching current human rights issues to aid media and public information outreach; -Maintaining and updating media mailing lists; -Conducting media monitoring and compiling media clippings of news coverage of the work of the Office, the Treaty Bodies and Special Rapporteurs; -Help with preparation of material for press conferences; -Assist with setting up and running events, especially around Human Rights Day; -Draft website articles and social media posts; assist in researching material for speeches; -Perform other related duties requested by the supervisor, as appropriate. The internship is located at the New York Office of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The selected intern will be part of the Inter-governmental Affairs, Communication and Outreach Support Section (ICOS) and will respond to the Public Information Officer.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat internship programme applicants must, at the time of their submission, be enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree); be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master's degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or have completed an aforementioned academic degree, preferably in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related field, AND, if selected, must commence the internship on the date indicated on the acceptance letter. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
