Functional Responsibilities

The selected incumbent will undertake the following activities/responsibilities: 

  • Producing photos and videos, including interviews, b-roll and aerial (drone) footage to showcase UNOPS projects, events, high-level visits, impact stories and other key activities.

  • Editing photos, including retouching and correction.

  • Writing scripts and coming up with creative concepts and ideas for video impact stories in collaboration with the communications focal point. 

  • Editing videos, including social media and longer format videos, and all the associated activities (motion graphics, sourcing voice overs where appropriate, subtitling and translation etc.) while respecting UNOPS brand and technical guidelines as well as conventional subtitling practices.

  • Assisting the establishment and maintenance of a photo database while using the file naming and caption convention in agreement with the communications focal point.

  • Attending meetings with the relevant project personnel to understand project briefs, needs and general vision and prepare the plan for filming and production of short films.

  • The incumbent will be required to have their own equipment, including professional cameras, lighting, microphones etc and be available for travel as needed.

Delivery

  • At least five 5 digital photos in web resolution will be provided immediately upon completion of a covered activity.  

  • At least 20 digital photos, showing a diverse range of activities, will be uploaded to the designated Google drive within 48 hours of completion of a covered activity. Photos must contain all relevant metadata, including keywords, captions, names of people featured, credits etc. The files should retain their original names and be organized clearly by labeled folders. Photos must be provided in all three of the following formats. Web resolution jpegs (1600 pixels 98dpi); high resolution jpegs (minimum 4000 pixels, 300 dpi); and in PSD (editable) format.

  • In cases where the assignment also involves video, the best raw footage, clearly organized, must be uploaded to the designated Google drive within 48 hours of completion of the covered activity. All videos must be in a resolution no less than 1920x1080 and of professional quality. Any audio recorded must also be of professional quality.

  • All video and photo products must comply with UNOPS branding guidelines as well as with UNOPS Photo and Video Submission Terms

  • In cases where the assignment requires fully edited videos, these should only be realized once an initial draft script has been agreed upon with the communications focal point. Once a video produced has been finalized, all deliverables as set out in UNOPS Photo and Video Submission Terms (Part 2) must also be provided. 

Inputs required to perform activities

UNOPS shall provide the Communications Senior Officer - Digital and Content with:

  • Photography/videography Release Form,

  • Identified individuals, groups and locations for the filming,

  • UNOPS brandbook for guidance on acceptable fonts, colors etc,

  • High resolution vector logos of national partners, UNOPS and its donor and partner organizations,

  • Communications contact person.

  • All copyrights of produced photos and videos are reserved to UNOPS KEMCO and the related projects. UNOPS will be free to adapt and modify them in the future. The photos cannot be altered, sold or redistributed to third parties. Where appropriate, the Communications Senior Officer - Digital and Content will be credited.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in film, journalism, photography, media or other related areas is required. 

  • Secondary school education with relevant years of experience may be considered in lieu of a first-level degree. 

  • A Technical/Professional diploma  with relevant years of experience may be considered in lieu of a first-level degree.

  • A relevant combination of academic credentials and/or industry certifications and qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of university education. 

Experience
  • A minimum of 4 years experience (with a Bachelor's), 2 years (with a Master's), 6 years with a Technical/Professional diploma, 8 years (with a secondary School diploma) in shooting images in difficult environments, visual storytelling, interviewing subjects, and photographic editing is required;

  • A minimum of 4 years experience in photographing at conferences and workshops and of individuals is required;

  • A minimum of 4 years experience in recording, producing and editing video is required;

  • A minimum of 4 years proficiency in use of Google suite applications, Photoshop, Adobe Premiere and other professional editing software is required;

  • Knowledge of local and national media scene in East and Southern Africa is an advantage;

  • Experience in interviews in the field is an asset;

  • Experience in developmental projects is an asset;

  • Experience in the UN setting is an asset.

Language

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Swahili is an advantage.
