Background

UN Women, guided by the principles of equality outlined in the Charter of the United Nations, is dedicated to eradicating discrimination against women and girls, empowering women, and promoting equality between women and men as equal partners and beneficiaries in development, human rights, humanitarian action, peace, and security. With a focus on placing women’s rights at the forefront of its initiatives, UN Women leads and coordinates efforts across the United Nations system to ensure that commitments to gender equality and mainstreaming are translated into tangible actions worldwide. It provides decisive and cohesive leadership to support the priorities and endeavors of Member States, forging effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant stakeholders.
In Tunisia, UN Women is currently concentrating its efforts on three main areas: Governance and Women’s Political Participation, Women’s Economic Empowerment, and Women's Peace and Security. Collaborating with various stakeholders from government, civil society organizations, and the parliament, UN Women endeavors to mainstream gender considerations into public policies, strategies, legislative reforms, and processes related to political and economic participation. Since the 2011 revolution, UN Women Tunisia has been actively involved in advocating for the integration of gender equality provisions in the 2014 constitution and promoting parity conditions in electoral laws. These endeavors have been further reinforced during the post-revolutionary period through the revision of discriminatory laws, the establishment of high-level gender-focused mechanisms like the “Conseil des Pairs,” the adoption of the National Action Plan on Resolution 1325, and the full integration of parity into local elections legislation.
Specifically, the office has supported research initiatives examining the role of women in preventing violent extremism, the socioeconomic factors influencing women’s involvement in violent extremism, and the connection between public violence against women and violent extremism. These research endeavors aim to provide insights to inform decision-making processes regarding violent extremism and to guide UN Country Team programming in this domain.
