Mission and objectives

1. Background of ACT-SA The Anti-Corruption Trust of Southern Africa (hereinafter referred to as ACT-SA) is a registered regional, non-governmental, non-profit making and non-political organisation that was founded in 2004 to campaign against corruption in the private and public sectors. 2. Vision Accountable, transparent and legitimate public and private sector institutions operating alongside a well informed empowered and actively engaged citizenry. 3. Mission Statement To contribute towards good governance and the ending of corruption in Southern Africa through: (1) Institutional capacity building, (2) Situational prevention of corruption, (3) Social prevention and public empowerment; (4) Anti-corruption policy and law reform and (5) Research and development.

Context

In May 2023, the Anti-Corruption Trust of Southern Africa (ACT-SA) concluded its Strategic Plan for the period ending in December 2028. ACT-SA had noted with concern, general level of apathy and indifference by citizens, business sector and civil society in dealing with corruption. Whilst others justify the reluctance to confront corruption head-on with fear of reprisals, the failure to take action is dangerous because where citizens fail to hold public officials accountable, corruption and with it impunity, continue to spread. At the end it becomes endemic, institutionalized and part of life. When it becomes a culture, the process of reversing this culture becomes costly whilst the same citizens bear the brunt of its ugliness. While corruption affects the poor, it has a layered impact on vulnerable groups within poor communities such as women, children, people with disabilities and LGBT people. In view of this gap, ACT-SA devised its strategic plan around empowering the citizenry, civil society, and private sector to take a leading role in anti-corruption work. It is the conviction of ACT-SA that if citizens, civil society and private sector actors are empowered with knowledge of the devastating effects of corruption and equipped with the technical skills to combat it, they will shun, report and refuse corruption in their respective communities and areas of work and in turn this will reduce incidents of corrupt activities that go unchecked and ultimately eradicate corruption. In order to fulfill this broad vision, ACT-SA is guided by the following strategic objectives: To improve access to justice for victims of corruption, targeting marginalized communities, especially women, youths, the disabled and those living with HIV and AIDS; To facilitate a vibrant, inclusive, empowered and well-coordinated civil society in Southern Africa; To equip citizens and private sector actors with knowledge , skills and tools to fight against corruption; and To create an enabling environment for civil society, the private sector, anti-corruption activists, whistleblowers, human rights defenders to carry out their duties and responsibilities free from reprisals and other forms of attack. However, the successful implementation of the Plan requires all interested and affected parties to work together. This includes the need for strategic alliances or partnership with governments, multilaterals, foundations, academia, civil society and churches in fighting corruption at national and regional level. Our doors are wide open for partnership and collaboration. To this end, ACT-SA seeks a Resource and Partnership Mobilization specialist to conduct a Donor Mapping Exercise, specifically identifying donors and other partners who have interest to support civil society organizations working in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Southern Africa in general.
