Job Title: Immigration Intern - Summer 2024

Duration: 3-6 Months; 15 hours per week; Standard business hours

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity, and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.
 
SCOPE OF WORK: The Immigration Program Intern will work closely with the Immigration Department to serve refugees and members of the local immigrant community.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:  The intern will gain experience in the immigration process, particularly as it is unique to refugees and the intricacies of the immigration system at the local level.  

 
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assisting Immigration Legal Representatives to complete immigration applications for Green Cards, Citizenship, and other applications as needed. 
  • Making copies of petitions and evidence.  
  • Completing case notes related to client case files. 
  • Working one-on-one with clients to complete applications. Conducting follow-up phone calls to clients. 


Qualifications
  • In-office attendance on Thursdays or Tuesdays.
  • Current undergraduate, graduate student, or less than one year out of school. 
  • Fluency in one of the following languages is strongly preferred: Arabic, Farsi, Pashto, and Spanish. 
  • Prior experience in immigration is a plus. 
  • Completion of IRC orientation and successful completion of a comprehensive background check (Live Scan & HireRight) are mandatory.
  • Possesses a high level of cultural awareness and sensitivity toward vulnerable immigrant populations, with a dedicated commitment to assisting unaccompanied minors in their transition to life in the U.S.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills and thrives in collaborative, cross-cultural environments.
  • Exhibits strong organizational capabilities and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Displays cultural competency and proficient communication abilities.
  • Shows enthusiasm for understanding the broader IRC mission, philosophy, global endeavors, and local initiatives.
  • Willing to comply with IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
