Organizational Setting

The Office of Emergencies and Resilience (OER) is responsible for ensuring FAO’s efforts to support countries and partners in preparing for and effectively responding to food and agricultural threats and crises. It is responsible for coordinating the development and maintenance of corporate tools and standards to enable Decentralized Offices to assist member countries to prepare for and respond to emergencies. OER ensures humanitarian policy coordination and knowledge, liaison with the Interagency Standing Committee (IASC) as well as with humanitarian resource partners, co-leadership with World Food Programme (WFP) of the global Food Security Cluster (FSC), organizational preparedness, surge capacity and response to large-scale emergencies. OER supports food and nutrition security assessment and early warning activities related to emergency and humanitarian analysis and responses. OER plays a major role in the development and leadership of the Organization’s programme to increase the resilience of livelihoods to food and agriculture threats and crises.


Reporting Lines

The Digital Communication Specialist will work under the overall supervision of the Resource Mobilization and Communications Team Leader and the direct supervision of the Outreach and Reporting Coordinator, OER, in consultation with OCC and relevant divisions at headquarters and collaboration with humanitarian policy and partnerships staff in headquarters and field offices.

Digital communication (website management and social media content production).


Tasks and responsibilities

• Maintain the Office of Emergencies and Resilience (OER) web site by identifying, drafting and updating content, ensuring compliance with FAO style and corporate web and social media policies;
• Develop a social media strategy to showcase FAO’s work in emergencies context and to increase engagement on what humanitarian investment in agriculture can achieve;
• Manage OER presence on Twitter and Flickr by identifying suitable content available on the divisional web site and preparing postings, including related visuals, contributing to FAO, UN or other partner’s social-media campaigns when pertinent to the work of FAO in emergencies, ensuring the compliance of the @FAOemergencies Twitter account with the corporate social media policy;
• Research and write digital content in collaboration with technical teams;
• Work with graphic designers to produce content for digital channels and campaigns;
• Support DO, particularly L3 countries, in developing their digital presence on Twitter and Flickr;
• Support FAO in emergencies internal communication. Managing the photo archive, including investigating for alternative solution to improve the access and usability of the archive and coordinating the weekly highlights;
• Manage thematic/regional/country social media channels, as per the FAO social media guidelines\:

• Perform any other related duties as required.


Liaison with the OCC will be maintained, either directly or through an agreed focal point/coordinator, to ensure compliance with OCC standards, appropriate review and clearance processes.

Minimum Requirements

• University degree in communication, social science, journalism, political science or a related field;
• At least one year (Category C), or five years (Category B) of relevant experience in digital communication, content production\: for digital platforms and web management;
• Working knowledge (level C) of English and limited knowledge (level B) of any other official language of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian). For PSA, working knowledge (level C) of English.

Technical/Functional Skills

• Extent and relevance of experience with managing websites (CMS) and producing social media content;
• Extent and relevance of experience in contributing to outreach and visibility efforts, particularly related to humanitarian contexts;
• Depth of knowledge of agricultural threats and crises;
• Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and Photoshop is desirable;
• Intermediate level of Spanish or French would be an asset;
• Ability to manage tight deadlines and multiple work streams;
• Ability to operate effectively in a team, contributing positively to team operations and working relationships.
