Background:

 

Situated in the Office of Head of Mission, Environmental Unit serves as the Mission’s focal point for the OSCE’s Second Dimension, i.e. economic and environmental activities. This unit oversees the Mission’s Environmental portfolio, which includes support to the authorities, civil society and wider public in raising environmental awareness and promoting collective action toward tackling environmental problems. Aarhus Convention implementation forms an important part of this work and the Environmental Unit maintains close co-operation with the Network of Aarhus Centres in BiH, building the Aarhus Centres’ capacities and implementing joint projects. Environmental Unit also assists with the OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum process and supports the implementation of extra-budgetary projects led by the Secretariat. 

Tasks and Responsibilities:

 

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Assistant and overall supervision of the Environmental Co-operation Officer, the successful candidate will be tasked with the following duties:

1. Providing support to the Environmental Unit in monitoring, analyzing and reporting on developments within BiH relating to the OSCE Second Dimension;

2. Assisting with the implementation of the Mission’s Environmental portfolio and activities in support of Aarhus Convention implementation;

3. Conducting in-depth research on environmental policy, law and other relevant topics in order to propose new avenues of Mission engagement;
 
4. Gathering, compiling and synthesizing relevant information from the Mission’s Field Offices, media and online sources; 

5. Contributing to drafting inputs to regular internal reports, reports to the Secretariat, memos and briefing files/ notes for the files;

6. Participating in meetings with local authorities, Aarhus Centers, international organizations and others; 

7. Performing other duties as required.

Necessary Qualifications:

 

  • You should be under the age of 30 on the date of the deadline of this vacancy notice/requisition;
  • You should be in your final year of higher education at graduate or postgraduate level or within two years after graduation by the deadline of the vacancy notice/requisition;
  • Your educational background should be in a field relevant to the OSCE’s mandate;
  • Knowledge of environmental issues in BiH, of environmental law and main conventions and instruments in the area of environment protection;
  • Professional fluency in English with excellent communication (both oral and written) skills;
  • Professional fluency in Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian (BCS) with excellent communication (both oral and written) skills;
  • Strong analytical, research and drafting skills;
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills with ability to work under pressure, manage multiple tasks and process large amounts of information;
  • Previous experience in working/interning within public institutions, CSOs or international organizations;
  • Computer literate with practical experience using Microsoft applications;
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people from different national and cultural backgrounds, whilst maintaining impartiality and objectivity;

 

 

Remuneration Package:

 

The OSCE is not in a position to pay any remuneration or cover any expenses incurred by the intern during his/her stay in Sarajevo nor reimburse travel expenses. However, interns selected who are non-residents of Sarajevo may be eligible for some compensation towards their living costs in Sarajevo. 

The internship lasts up to six (6) months for citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Internships do not constitute a commitment to future employment with the OSCE. 

The selected intern shall provide the OSCE with evidence that he/she has health insurance coverage which is valid for Bosnia and Herzegovina, otherwise he/she shall be obliged to join the OSCE group health insurance scheme for the period of their internship, at their own expense. The OSCE will cover life and disability insurance for the duration of internship.
