Organizational Setting

 

 The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and   Environmental Protection". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources,   environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's   objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments   through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

 The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture assists Member States of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the     United Nations (FAO) and the IAEA in using nuclear techniques and related technologies to improve food security, alleviate poverty and promote   sustainable agriculture. The Joint Centre consists of five Sections, each with an associated laboratory (located in Seibersdorf, 45 km south-east of     Vienna), in the areas of\: animal production and health; plant breeding and genetics; insect pest control; soil and water management and crop nutrition;   and food safety and control.

Main Purpose

The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques for Food and Agriculture is engaged in many existing and new projects (including flagship and donor funded projects) with Member States, research institutes and private sector companies. Reporting to the Acting Director of the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre, the consultant will support the programmatic management of the Director's Office and assist in the delivery of flagship initiatives and key events. This includes the development of concept notes, documents, roadmaps, speeches, presentations and correspondence, covering all the areas in which the Joint/FAO Centre is involved, in particular plant breeding and genetics, insect pest control, animal production and health, food safety and security and soil and water management and crop nutrition. The consultant will further compile, review and edit information provided by the different scientific sections and laboratories of the Joint Centre, and convert them into high quality products, adjusted to the public and stakeholders it is meant for. The consultant will assist in the preparation of documents and events related to flagship initiatives such as Atoms4Food and ZODIAC, and key events such as those to be organised for the 60th anniversary of the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre, as well as other events including side-events at the World Food Forum and COP-29.

Functions / Key Results Expected

• Draft proposals, documents, correspondence, presentations and organize meetings with the selected resource partners to establish collaborations;
• Provide technical input to and coordinates activities related to FAO/IAEA projects in the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre, including programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports etc.;
• Review and revise, as necessary, all submissions for substantive programmes/projects, ensuring compliance with mandates, guidelines and programme/project objectives;
• Provide technical input to all activities related to the Atoms4Food and ZODIAC initiatives, including project proposals and events;
• Provide technical input to all activities related to the celebration of the 60th year anniversary of the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre, including events and documents.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master's Degree - Advanced University Degree in international relations or in food and agriculture.
  • At least five years of experience in writing strategic documents such as development strategies concept notes, roadmaps, annual reports etc.
  • Experience in organisation of high-level events.
  • Good command of written English. Capacity in other UN languages is an asset.

Remuneration

The remuneration for this consultancy is a daily fee of up to a maximum of €350, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided. Health coverage and pension fund are the responsibility of the incumbent.
