Position Description

EnCompass LLC is seeking a Senior Editing and Section 508 Specialist to ensure that EnCompass communication products and technical deliverables adhere to the company’s style, quality, and accessibility standards. This includes support for all levels of editing and document formatting, as well as accessibility support. The Senior Editing and Section 508 Specialist also helps coordinate requests for editing, formatting, and writing to ensure that EnCompass technical teams and other groups receive the services they need from the Communications Team, and supports the development of tools, training, and resources to build staff capacity in producing high-quality written materials.

This is a full-time position located at the EnCompass principal office in Silver Spring, Maryland, and follows the EnCompass flexible hybrid work model with split time between telework and the office.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

Essential functions:

Technical:

  • Provides high-quality, audience-focused editorial services (copy editing, proofreading, and substantive editing) for technical deliverables and other communication products (e.g., evaluation reports, studies, strategies, training materials, work plans, new business proposals, blog posts, white papers, and news articles) in compliance with EnCompass’ and clients’ branding and marking standards
  • Provides high-quality, audience-focused document formatting and 508 remediation support for technical deliverables and other products
  • Develops creative and innovative accessibility solutions that adhere to organization, USG Section 508, and/or WCAG guidelines
  • Collaborates with other Communications Team members to manage incoming requests, assess individual and team workload, and prioritize tasks
  • Designs and delivers orientation sessions, refresher training, and other learning opportunities to raise EnCompass staff’s knowledge and skills related to editing, writing, and EnCompass’ style
  • Collaborates with other members of the Communications Team to create and update EnCompass templates for reports and other materials, and orient teams on how to effectively use them
  • Supports periodic reviews of the EnCompass Style Guide and related tools and resources to reflect current industry trends or organizational changes; assists with updating materials as needed; and helps orient staff across the company to any updates

  • Contributes to team and corporate work plans, quality initiatives, and other activities that apply to the role of communications at EnCompass
  • Engages fully as a member of the EnCompass staff team, including participating in staff meetings and other EnCompass events, and providing administrative support to other team members as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

Qualifications

Academic Qualifications

  • Minimum of a high school diploma and 10 years’ experience; an Associate’s degree and 8 years’ experience; a Bachelor’s degree and 6 years’ experience; or a Master’s degree and 4 years’ experience

Experience and Skills

  • Strong writing and editing skills and in-depth command of English language grammar and syntax
  • Strong ability to restructure parts of language to achieve grammatical correctness, linguistic efficiency, uniformity, and seamless readability without disrupting the author’s style or intended meaning
  • Demonstrated ability to remediate digital products to meet USG minimum requirements for 508 compliance
  • Demonstrated experience using Adobe Acrobat Pro and CommonLook or similar software to inspect and remediate PDF files
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards and compliance with Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act, WCAG, and/or copyright law
  • Exceptional thoroughness, heightened attention to detail, and commitment to consistency
  • Demonstrated ability to apply the guidance in an organization-specific style guide, and differentiate between American and British English to adhere to clients’ standards as needed
  • Advanced skills in working with templates and formatting materials using Microsoft Office programs, especially Word and PowerPoint; working with charts in Microsoft Excel; working with templates and formatting materials using Google Suite, especially Docs and Slides
  • Flexibility, openness to change, and proven ability to manage multiple priorities/tasks and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work independently with diverse teams at all levels of an organization; and adeptness in inclusivity and multiculturalism
  • Knowledge of more than one language is preferred
  • Familiarity with international development and USAID programs is highly desirable
  • Ability to provide clear and constructive feedback, and receive feedback from colleagues
  • Strong work ethic with a commitment to excellence

The Starting Pay Range has been updated for 2024

The pay range for this role allows for the wide variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, certifications, and other business and organizational needs. At EnCompass, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range for this role is $74,500 - $88,000
