The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is a multilateral development bank whose mission is financing the Infrastructure for Tomorrow—infrastructure with sustainability at its core. AIIB’s Strategy, Policy and Budget (SPB) Department is responsible for: (i) developing and monitoring the implementation of the Bank’s strategic agenda; (ii) developing and overseeing compliance with the Bank’s operational policies and procedures for the Bank’s infrastructure investment operations (non-treasury), including environmental, social, procurement and financial management; and (iii) developing and monitoring the Bank’s annual business plan to implement the Bank’s strategies and manage the Bank’s administrative budget to support the implementation of the annual business plan.

SPB is recruiting an Associate to support the work of the Sector Strategy team in furthering and implementing the Bank’s sector strategies.  In particular, as the Bank implements its first Corporate Strategy and looks to increase its financing operations in terms of both scale and value add, it must increase its ability to identify, assess and translate market trends into financing opportunities to better inform its investment operations and serve the needs of its Members.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of the Associate will be to support the development and implementation of the Bank’s sector strategies by conducting research and analytical work on market trends and opportunities, providing data on relevant infrastructure sub-sectors, regional/country profiles and supporting Investment Operations with the knowledge and analysis to better position the Bank to develop its market position. Additionally, the role will support the development of the Bank’s brand through better communication of AIIB’s mandate, value add and infrastructure financing thought leadership.  While the position will support the Sector Strategy team across all its sectors, it is expected that particular focus will be on the Sustainable Cities and Transport strategies and the connectivity and private capital mobilization thematic priorities.

Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Identify, analyze and present qualitative and quantitative data on developments and trends in key infrastructure sectors in a systematic manner; assisting in the preparation and updating of sector and geographic profiles.
  • Identify and substantiate medium term sectoral opportunities together with the required knowledge and market entry recommendations for AIIB Investment Operations.
  • Track and assess developments in financial structuring and infrastructure financing solutions and prepare recommendations on applicability to AIIB operations.
  • Support sector and thematic priority leads to implement market opportunity studies, sector knowledge pieces and analysis.
  • Support sector leads in reviewing projects through the investment cycle, particularly to identify opportunities to increase AIIB value-add.
  • Contribute to the drafting and review of sector strategy documents being developed for internal and external uses.
  • Produce documents, presentations and supporting materials to effectively communicate AIIB’s sector strategies both internally and externally.
  • Plan and organize seminars, conferences, meetings, work plans and travel relevant for sector strategy development.
  • Support the recruitment and monitoring of consultants and their travels and meetings as part of sector strategy development.
  • Conduct other work as required by SPB.

Requirements:

  • Minimum: bachelor/graduate degree in economics, public policy, development studies, business administration, social sciences, statistics, data analytics and management or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of relevant work experience in a similar position in a relevant organization which can include a multilateral development bank, investment bank, a research organization or a corporation.
  • Proven ability to conduct research and analysis on policies, sectors, markets and financial information.
  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated experience in using spreadsheets and managing, organizing and presenting data.
  • Experience in urban infrastructure, transportation, private financing of infrastructure and working with investment teams would be an advantage.
  • Ability to think independently while working under supervision, collaborate with other team members and contribute productively to a team’s work and output.
  • Excellent proficiency in professional writing and speaking in English.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • A high level of personal integrity, self-motivation, sense of responsibility and genuine commitment to corporate values of the AIIB.
