The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

Program Overview:

Nearly one billion people are visually impaired because they have no access to eyeglasses. Most live in low-and middle-income countries. The need for eyeglasses is growing rapidly, in part due to changing demographics. Not having access to eyeglasses has a significant impact on people’s ability to learn, earn, drive safely and live healthy and productive lives. Over the past decades, NGOs have put this issue on the map and, together with partners, have tested different approaches to getting eyeglasses to millions. The challenge is now how we can build on these learnings and scale from the roughly 10 million people who got glasses through these initiatives to the 1 billion people that need them.

CHAI has experience in tackling issues and driving impact at scale. Through our work in other health areas, we have transformed access at a global and at the country level. We now seek to replicate this, in partnership with governments, for making eyeglasses available to millions of people whose lives can be impacted dramatically. We will work with partners like to the World Health Organization’s SPECS 2030 initiative and EYElliance among others to develop and implement global and country-specific plans for accelerating the adoption of proven delivery models and innovative tools that make access to glasses more affordable and available around the world. We are building on initial work that has already started in several countries, where we are working to increase the demand by doing targeted screening and streamlining the supply by introducing digital ordering tools and integrating eyeglasses into government supply chains.

Position Overview:

In this role, you will help shape CHAI’s new program on increasing global access to eyeglasses. You will be expected to: 1) lead the development and coordinate the implementation of CHAI’s global eyeglasses access strategy; 2) provide support to CHAI country teams with developing and implementing existing and new eyeglasses programs; 3) help identify potential funders and develop concept notes; and 4) work with global stakeholders via new and existing coalitions to increase awareness and donor investments that will drive change at a global scale. A business-oriented approach is needed to tackle this problem at scale and mobilize investments. We will need to understand what delivery channels are most cost-effective for delivering eyeglasses to different target populations in various settings. You will be expected to help develop investment plans based on available data and new evidence. You will also support market research on the eyeglasses market in LMICs. This may involve desktop research, analyzing and interpreting data, and interviewing key stakeholders. This work will require you to develop compelling and clear presentations and communication materials. You will need to build effective working relationships, both with external partners and CHAI colleagues.

In this role, you will be part of the CHAI’s Global Assistive Technology team and report to the Director. You will have a regular interaction with other CHAI country and global teams. You are expected to work independently and flexibly and have a deep personal commitment to producing the highest quality results. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with business acumen and outstanding communication skills. CHAI places great value on relevant personal qualities: resourcefulness, entrepreneurialism, tenacity, independence, humility, and work ethic. Limited travel up to 20% is expected.

Lead the development and coordinate the implementation of CHAI’s global eyeglasses access strategy. This includes:

• Identify high-impact opportunities for increasing access to eyeglasses.
• Identify and engage with strategic partners to drive the implementation. Examples include the World Health Organization, EYElliance, donors, professional associations, and academic institutions.
• Develop and maintain a comprehensive evidence-based approach on what works to increase access to glasses, incl. u- data on the global burden, impact evidence, and best-practice interventions.
• Develop a global CHAI strategy for increasing access to eyeglasses in consultation with CHAI country teams, technical teams, and leadership.
• Lead the dissemination of this strategy, track progress and propose updates that are informed by learnings of context changes.

Provide support to CHAI country teams with developing and implementing existing and new eyeglasses programs:

• Facilitate knowledge sharing across CHAI program countries.
• Help liaise with technical experts where relevant.
• Coordinate or lead the development of global knowledge sharing products, this includes publications and external communications.
• Where useful and relevant, support with the development of donor reports.
• Where appropriate, assist countries with information to establish or strengthen local production.

Help identify potential funders and develop concept notes:

• Conduct a comprehensive mapping of potential funders.
• Develop an engagement plan. This may involve coordination with our partners (e.g., EYElliance).
• Inform countries about funding opportunities.
• Support with the development of concepts notes and proposals. This may involve leading multi-country proposals.

Work with global stakeholders via new and existing coalitions to increase awareness and donor investments that will drive change at a global scale:

• As part of the strategy, develop a comprehensive partnership and advocacy plan.
• Lead CHAI’s engagement with strategic partners, like the WHO SPECS 2030 imitative.
• Identify opportunities for establishing new partnerships and evaluate ongoing partnerships.
• Represent at global events, where useful and relevant.
• Develop presentations and communication materials for internal and external audiences and stakeholders.

Develop investment plans:

• Map evidence on cost-effective interventions
• Support the testing and evaluation of what delivery channels are most cost-effective for delivering eyeglasses to different target populations in various settings.

Other responsibilities as needed by supervisor.

• Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 6 years of work experience.
• Experience working in fast-paced, results-oriented environments, preferably in investment banking or strategy consulting.
• Dynamic, entrepreneurial individual with outstanding problem-solving, analytical, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrable track record for high performance working independently and effectively in unstructured, demanding, and remote environments.
• High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
• Ability to work effectively in multicultural environment.
• Ability to absorb and synthesize a broad range of information.
• Ability to be effective in high-pressure situations and handle multiple tasks simultaneously and highly organized.
• Ability to work with teams across time zones and locations.

Preferred qualifications:

• Master’s degree in business administration, economics, or related.
• Experience living or working internationally or working on global health issues.
• Expertise in health economics, cost-effectiveness research.
