What organization has the most accessible and disability-friendly career site?

How easy is it to apply to Impact organisations?

We have tested 50 career pages using Google's LightHouse accessibility tool. The test generates a score, helping us identify the organization with the most disability-friendly career site.

An accessible website not only assists users with visual or hearing impairments but also ensures usability with keyboards and various devices.

Google's Lighthouse scans and evaluates website and benchmark against recognized accessibility standards.

With this test we can determine:

Which career site in the UN system is the most accessible?

Which one of the larger foundations like Kellogg's, the Melinda and Gates Foundation, and the Clinton Foundation, focus on accessibility?

Is the World Bank's career site more accessible than the IMF's?

What donor, Sida, DANIDA, FCDO, and USAID, prioritizes accessibility the most?

We know that both the EU and the UN Secretariat are keen on recruiting People With Disabilities (PWDs), but how easy is it to even get to the stage of applying for a job at these two giants?

Methodology: We tested 50 websites using Google Lighthouse analytics between December 12-13, 2023. We conducted one test on the official start page and another on the career page. Both scores were combined, and the comparison below uses the average. Please note that candidate gateways were not tested.

About the tool: Google's Lighthouse is an open-source, automated tool for enhancing web page quality. It can assess any web page, whether public or requiring authentication, covering performance, accessibility, progressive web apps, SEO, and more.

About the results: Sites should aim for a good score (90-100) to provide a satisfactory user experience. Achieving a "perfect" score of 100 is extremely difficult. For instance, improving a score from 99 to 100 requires similar effort as enhancing a score from 90 to 94.

A few words about the data and the result

To briefly summarise the list, one can say that together with Foreign Commonwealth Development Office (UK FCDO), Impactpool takes accessibility most seriously of all (see above screenshot for the Impactpool score).

It is also a quality stamp that Christian Blind Mission (CBM), Humanity & Inclusion (Handicap International), as well as Amnesty is in the top.

A bit surprising is to find the Microsoft sibling, Gates Foundation, so far down the list.

With historical benchmark data at hand it is interesting to see that UNHCR has improved its accessibility, but it is also sad that WorkDay (the ERP tool UNHCR uses today), doesn't take accessibility more seriously. Also the IRC has improved significantly (after changing recruitment software), past accessibility test we run on their career page was at 64%.

21 organisations have over 90% in accessibility score which is the definition of an accessible site. Most organizations are equally accessible on mobile and web.

The only organisation that stands out in that sense is the United Nations Secretariat, which has a significant discrepancy between the accessibility from a desktop device (78%) and from a handheld device (56%).

Among all recruitment software targeting the Impact sector, Impactpool Recruit clearly is the most accessible.
