Learn what it is like working at EUROCONTROL in air traffic management. In this article, you will meet María Jesús Lara González from Spain, Software Engineer.

I started to become interested in aviation during my final year project, which was on a real-time helicopter simulator. I hold a master’s degree in telecommunications engineering, having specialized in robotics.

Before joining EUROCONTROL’s Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC), I worked in Spain as a software engineer in an ATC project which years later took me to the Netherlands, where I have continued working in the ATC sector for EUROCONTROL for over a decade as a software engineer in MUAC’s Flight Data Processing Team. At MUAC, I make sure that controllers can use a system they can rely on. Part of my tasks includes coordination (between sectors and with external partners), flight plan monitoring and correlation. I personally had the chance to be part of the development team of the new flight data processing (FDP) system. I worked on projects such as the FDP system for the Royal Netherlands Air Force, the FDP system for the Belgian Air Component and I also took the lead in the MOAT Project (the MUAC OAT Service Provision Project).

I love working at EUROCONTROL because of all the possibilities to develop myself professionally, but also personally, within an international and multicultural environment.

Recently I joined the MUAC Diversity and Inclusion Think-tank (which is an internal initiative) to help develop guidelines for a more diverse and inclusive working environment.”
