Meet with Beth Crawford, Assistant Director-general, Office of Strategy, Programme and Budget (OSP) at FAO

Included in the 2023 gender equality campaign for Women in Senior Roles, we share short employee spotlights from international professional women in senior positions working at some of the most important international organizations in the world. Meet Beth Crawford who is the Assistant Director-general, Office of Strategy, Programme and Budget (OSP) at FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

 

  1. Why and how did you end up working for FAO?

As an American growing up in the Netherlands, I always had an interest in different cultures and understanding how people see the world.  After university in the United States, I wanted to see more of the world before deciding on a career direction.  So I applied to the Peace Corps and ended up spending two fantastic and formative years as a volunteer in a small village in DRC Congo.  That experience solidified my desire to work in international development and led me to my career in FAO where I have now been for over 25 years.



  1. From your perspective, what set of skills do you find valuable for your current work at FAO? Any tips you can share with potential applicants who are considering joining FAO?

Skills I find valuable are to be open-minded, inclusive, and be ready to embrace new opportunities.  I am also a firm believer in keeping a good balance in one’s life, knowing that it helps me perform better at work.  For me that includes making sure I have time for my family, for exercise, and for sharing good food with family and friends. 

Tips I would share with potential applicants is to think through carefully why you are applying to the position – and then to communicate clearly during the application process both why you are well qualified for the position but also what makes you excited about the role. And then bring that same level of knowledge, enthusiasm and collaboration to the actual job!  



  1. What according to you is the most effective way to address gender equality in the workplace?

While I certainly don’t have the answer to the most effective way to address gender equality, what I have always done myself - if I find that I am being treated in a way that appears to be gender biased - is to raise the issue directly with the person in question in a professional and respectful, yet assertive, manner.  I don’t try to label what happened, just to make my observations clear.  I find that this almost always leads to a good conversation with subsequent improvements in the working situation and a deeper understanding on both sides.  

 

  1. What motivates you to do the work you do?

I have always enjoyed the content of my work, which I find both interesting and challenging, but I also love learning from and working with wonderful colleagues from all over the world.
