Your application has a difficult job: it needs to make your experience relevant, your achievements visible, and your motivation credible—often before a recruiter has time to read every word.
You may have heard the claim that recruiters spend just six seconds reviewing a resume. That figure comes from an older eye-tracking study by TheLadders, which reported an average initial scan of around six seconds in 2012. A 2018 update reported 7.4 seconds. These studies measured an initial scan, not the total time a recruiter spends evaluating a candidate, and the exact figure should not be treated as a universal rule.
The practical lesson still holds: make the most important information easy to find. The international development and humanitarian job market is competitive, but it is not impossible to break into. Impactpool's 2026 Pulse survey of 2,786 professionals found that more than half of respondents had applied for one to five roles in the previous six months, and 55% of those applicants received at least one interview. The message is encouraging: you do not necessarily need to apply everywhere. You need to apply strategically.
