What was your background (prior to joining AIIB)?
I was working for a consulting firm that specialized in IT service, digital transformation and business strategy. During my three-and-a-half years of employment, I was exposed to the financial service sector through my work with clients in various sectors such as consumer finance, commercial banking, insurance and multilateral development banking. Skilled in data analytics and financial management, I always played a role as a business analyst that delivers data application and quantitative model for portfolio management.
How did you find out about AIIB? What motivated you to apply?
I spent more than two years assisting AIIB with the implementation of the Bank’s loan management system before I joined. I was then drawn to the workplace culture of equality, diversity, mutual respect and collaboration via connecting with stakeholders from diverse departments. I discovered that I was useful in bridging system/data utilization with business needs, which to some extent contributes to enhancing the effectiveness of digitalization. Personally, AIIB gives me a better chance to hone my data analytics skills in a more organized and focused manner.
What skill sets are most valuable at your current work? Any tips you can share with potential applicants who are considering joining AIIB?
As a member of the data team, I work on the “Data Platform,” our flagship project which aims to digitalize data flow connecting business systems and to create data applications that help business units increase operational efficiency and even generate new business insight. I always begin my morning by checking in with our technical team on daily duties and project status, sometimes to manage the advancement of deliverables or conduct analysis on any problems discovered during regular operations. Then I spend a significant amount of my day in three areas after the morning meeting: 1) Consult with company stakeholders, comprehend business data processes, compile and organize data requirements, build data solutions and keep appropriate records. 2) Convert data requirements into technical specifications, conduct data analysis and retain knowledge of data from business systems. Work together with the project manager and implementation team to support solution design and delivery. 3) Lead data solution testing, assist with troubleshooting, and mentor users with new data products/services. I’m now in charge of data application and delivery from the Implementation Monitoring, Risk and Treasury departments. I also work with colleagues in analyzing other requirements from Office of Controller, Facilities and Administrative Services Department and Operational Partnership Department.
How would you describe your life in Beijing (challenges, interesting finds, cultural experiences, food, misconceptions, etc.)?
In my job, my ability to communicate with business stakeholders and analyze data requirements is my most valuable skill set. This includes prioritizing the needs gathered, clearly understanding the business pain point and coordinating the technical implementation of the business requirement. If I had any advice for prospective candidates, it would be to actively familiarize themselves with the business knowledge, structure and model of AIIB and to always seek out the advice of your coworkers, technical team members and business stakeholders.
How would you describe your life in Beijing (challenges, interesting finds, cultural experiences, food, misconceptions, etc.)?
Although I am less affected by cultural shocks because I am Chinese, moving to Beijing is nonetheless exciting and difficult. On the one hand, this city is made brighter by its illustrious past, but it is in no way mired in it. I do appreciate its intricate historical tapestry, even as my daily activities take on a dizzying diversity. Fortunately, those around me, especially my coworkers, are sharing their experiences in Beijing in a way that makes it easier for me to quickly become used to the way of life here.
