Driven by its philosophy that prevention is the best cure, Release Peace seeks to prevent the proliferation of small arms before they contribute to armed conflicts. Often, if a country is not in the daily news anymore, the attention of the international community turns away quickly. Until the cycle of conflict starts again. Release Peace wants to break that cycle. The NGO has projects on the ground, with a focus on West Africa, to remove weapons and bring communities together that have a history of tensions. By putting local communities in the lead for all its projects, Release Peace aims to prevent long-term dependencies on its own work and on that of outside parties in general.
Like others, the NGO considers peace the foundation for all social and economic development. Conflict prevention is therefore not seen in isolation but tied to topics like women’s rights and youth development. This connects to multiple Sustainable Development Goals and is aligned with the UN’s ambitions and those of, for example, the African Union and its Agenda 2063. In addition to efforts on the ground, Release Peace also engages with national governments and international bodies to advance multilateral treaties.
