Empowering Change: The Crucial Role of Women in STEM within International Organizations

On Thursday 21st March 2024 Impactpool will host its annual Women in STEM Virtual Career Fair.  Getting closer to the event, I thought it a good time for some contemplation.

The contributions of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) have become increasingly visible over the last decades. International organizations play a pivotal role in shaping the future of nations; it is therefore even more important to recognize the significance of gender diversity, specifically the inclusion of women in STEM fields, within these organizations.

While progress has been made, gender disparities persist in STEM fields. International organizations want to lead by example in promoting gender equality. By actively encouraging the participation of women in STEM roles, they contribute to closing the gender gap, inspiring young girls and women worldwide to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields. The presence of women in leadership positions within international organizations also serves as a powerful symbol, breaking down stereotypes and challenging preconceived notions about gender roles. 

From my days at the OPCW, I luckily saw an increase in female applicants in STEM fields and for senior positions. And therefore also an increased chance for women to be appointed to these positions.  If I remember correctly, from the days I started there to the day I left, the number of female Inspectors grew quite a bit.  But it remained an effort to find and attract women to apply.  So… a career fair dedicated to Women in STEM is one of the starting points! 

The inclusion of women in STEM within international organizations not only benefits the organization itself but also sets an example for other sectors, by means of their visibility in society.. By creating inclusive work environments that value diversity, these organizations can contribute to a cultural shift in how STEM fields are perceived. 

I know this may sound repetitive, but studies have consistently shown that diverse teams make better decisions. Women bring unique perspectives, communication styles, and problem-solving approaches to the decision-making process and the field of research. In international organizations, where decisions can have global implications, having a diverse group of decision-makers ensures a more comprehensive and well-rounded understanding of complex issues, making it a reflection of those that the organizations serve.  

As those of you who are part of our ‘Impact Pool’ are on the lookout for roles in international organizations, this is an opportunity to learn more and present yourself to the participating organizations.
