Job Title: Research Assistant
 
Location: Kolkata, India with extensive travel
 
Term: 24 months (renewable)
 
Salary: Salary Group 6 (Annual package between 13-15 lakhs)
 
The Research Assistant (RA) – Farming Systems, will be mainly responsible for supporting the research project which researches the resource use efficiency as well as mitigation of and adaptation to climate change in Sustainable Integrated Farming Systems (SIFS) developed by WHH and partners in India over the last decade. The RA will collect/receive and analyze quantitative and qualitative data on climate mitigation potential and climate adaptation processes with specific reference to food production for high-quality nutrition.
 
The specific programmatic responsibility of the RA are
  • Assessing changes of crop/breed pattern and agronomic practices and its impact on dietary diversity, yield quality over time of the SIFS approach
  • Economic analysis and market study of the SIFS approach
  • Providing recommendation for a larger diversity of food sources for a diverse, healthy, and reliable diet for farmers and consumers, thus building strong local food systems.
The RA will be based at Kolkata. S/he will work closely with the team at national and global level which has universities as collaborator, Welthungerhilfe and NGO partners and will be required to travel frequently to project areas for research purpose.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Organize field demonstration and associated capacity building of participating farmers.
  • Liaison/exchange/collaboration with the other research teams on a) use of resources for agriculture and their associated biogeochemical matter fluxes b) crop performance and productivity and c) landscape diversity – Assessment of mitigation and adaptive potential.
  • Co-Develop research papers, communication materials based on the action research outcome.
  • Take responsibility of the achievement of the main project targets as mentioned above.
  • Undertake field visits for action research setup, co-design experiments/data collection/analysis and validation of research outcome on a regular basis.
  • Facilitate adequate liaison and linkages with relevant networks, government departments and relevant agencies to support the research.
  • Work closely with the Welthungerhilfe team of Scientists, Program Managers and Finance Officer for effective implementation of the research program.
  • Co-supervision of Master Students together with WHH staff and university supervisors.
  • Co-moderate and co-facilitate workshops and seminars and ensure proper documentation and dissemination of lessons learnt.
  • Represent Welthungerhilfe at different platforms, meetings, seminars and consultations.
Others:
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade and as communicated by Welthungerhilfe.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • MSc or PhD in sustainable agriculture/nutrition/agroecology or allied disciplines.  
  • At least 2 years of work experience in (action) research is desirable.
  • Excellent writing skills for  research documentation and publication, communication and networking skills
  • Experience and high motivation/flair to connect with/learn from/work with farmers
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills in English, and verbal communication is Hindi/Bengali.
  • Data analytical skills
  • Proactive, self-driven, while at the same time being a good team player, highly motivated, and willing to go the extra mile.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
